Bocas Del Toro, Panama

Bocas Del Toro, Isla Colon
Bocas is the main town on Isla Colon, an island situated on Panama's northern coast on the Caribbean sea. It's basically a popular tourist draw for people wanting to surf and snorkel but most Panamanians opt to live on the mainland. The vibe here is extremely chilled and the local establishments cater for those wanting beer, cocktails and parties and there's definitely loads of that going on.

Day two we buy a day long boat trip involving all the local, best snorkelling and beach sites. The coral and marine life is amazing in this part of the caribbean and we're not disappointed by what we see while snorkelling despite the fact that the coral is disappearing at an alarming and quite visible rate.

Beautiful Red Frog Beach...

...and a rare Red Frog

On our last night at our hotel, we're woken by a hideous, grinding mechanical noise followed quickly by the smell of burning rubber and plumes of smoke which rapidly enters our room. The hotel appears to be on fire. The hotel staff don't care about keeping us informed about what is happening and the the place begins to swarm with panicing gringos and cockroaches escaping the smoke downstairs. We realise that there is no fire station on the island so we quickly pack our bags and make ready an escape. We wait and look around and notice that the smoke seems to be subsiding a little. Finally, all that is left is the dead carcasses of a dozen or so cockroaches littering the floor and 20 or 30 of bleary-eyed hotel guests wondering what to do next. Two hours later we're on a water taxi to the mainland and a bus to Costa Rica.
