Medellin, Colombia - 10th May 2001

On Plaza Botero, El Centro

Medellin
We arrived in Medellin after another overnight bus journey from Popayan and the plan is to catch another overnight bus tonight to Catagena which leaves is with a day to kill in the city. MedellĂn is the second largest city in Colombia with 2.4 million people and was once known as the most violent city in the world, a result of an urban war set off by the drug cartels at the end of the 1980s. Today however it's a buzzing, touristy, shopping capital reminiscent of West End London... on speed.

For breakfast we stopped of at El Poblado, a wealthy southern district in the city. We ordered "Ensalada de Frutas... grande" after feeling hungry from not eating properly the night before. It was a fruit feast with toppings of ice cream, yogurt and cream cheese. It set us up nicely for the rest of the day.

Before: It's just not breakfast without a glace cherry

After: Fat as a fool

From here we visited Plaza Botero in El Centro which is a really lovely place to hang out and features sculptures by Medellin figurative artist Fernando Botero. His style is to proportionally exaggerate his subjects, whether they be still life or portraits, giving them a 'fat' appearence. They're fantastic and the art gallery on the plaza, the Museum of Antioquia has an entire floor dedicated to his work.

Jesus looks good with a bit of fat on him!

After a great day hanging out here and feeling really arted up, we catch the metro to the bus terminal and catch our (hopefully) last night bus to Catagena.
